The Pepper Tree I fringe-leaf sapling gaze green upon proud young mugumo leaf-shivering we twine trustingly I bear three ginger blossoms earth heaves cracks mugumo tears rootfeet from shared soil wrenches trunk from mine branches snatch fragile fruit mugumo stalks snakey-limbed forest drops fruit bruised forgotten far from loving leaves and I root-torn try to die rain sings sap sun mantles buds I earth-bent seek sky sunbird hangs nightnest from sap-strong scarred branch wanders nectar-sipping rubs beak on twigs shares honey humming featherlove to my leaves yonder near forest stand three ginger seed
